What is Coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 is a supplement that acts much like a vitamin. It is also a natural substance found in the body. The body produces Coenzyme Q10 so the cells can produce energy for the body, to help support cell growth and cell maintenance.

Coenzyme Q10 functions much like an antioxidant, protecting the body from damage that is caused from powerful substances including free radicals. Many foods provide the body with this important antioxidant, including organ meats like liver and kidney, as well as traditional meats like beef. You can also eat mackerel, sardines, soy products, soy oil and peanuts to get a generous helping of Coenzyme Q10 in the diet.

Health Benefits of CoQ10

CoQ10 provides many health benefits, which is why some people supplement with this substance as they age. Some studies suggest that CoQ10 may help reduce the body’s risk of heart failure, muscular problems including muscular dystrophy and periodontal or dental disease. It may also increase energy levels and enable the body to recover faster from exercise.

If you have trouble with your heart, you should talk with your doctor or healthcare provider before supplementing with CoQ10 or any other supplement. While there is no hard evidence that COQ10 may sop heart failure, studies suggest that this supplement may have an impact on the symptoms associated with heart failure.

Still other studies suggest that Coenzyme Q10 may impact cancer, as many people with cancer have lower levels of CoQ10 in their blood, including individuals diagnosed with certain types of lung, breast, kidney, neck and myeloma cancers. CoQ10 may combat cancer by boosting the immune system. Researchers are examining how beneficial this supplement may be as an adjunct treatment along with traditional treatments for cancer.

As with any supplement, taking too much CoQ10 may be associated with side effects including insomnia. Be sure that you talk with your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects or if you plan to take this supplement as part of your healthcare regimen.
