Animal Kingdom: Elephants

Today we will explore the elephant, the largest living land animal. The elephant is known for its long trunk, columnar legs, incisors that grow into tusks, and large ear flaps. The elephant uses its long trunk is used for grasping objects. It also uses its tusks to move objects, to dig, and as weapons for fighting. Also, an elephant can flap its ears to control body temperature. The word elephant is based on a Latin word, elephantus.

Elephants are found throughout sub-Saharan African and the South and Southeast of Asia. They are found in savannas, grasslands, and forest, but also can live in deserts, swamps, and highlands. In general, elephants prefer to be near water.

The truck of the elephant is a very interesting organ and one of the most versatile organs in the animal kingdom. It is a combination of the upper lip and nose. Furthermore, it is large and powerful. In fact, it is capable of living more than 200 pounds. Yet, this doesn't make it slow. Made out of 16 muscles, the truck is fluid and has a lot of mobility. In fact, its structure allows it to be able to pick up objects such as coin and even cracking a peanut open, and putting the kernel in the mouth. Furthermore, the truck is used to breath, drink and eat.

Elephants females tend to form family groups which are led by the oldest females. Males, on the other hand, leave the family groups after puberty and live with other males or alone. Elephants can live up to 70 years and seem to have a sense of self-awareness and emphaty.
